Library Cards
How Do I Get a Library Card?
Library cards are issued to residents of Sumter County free of charge (ages 6 and up).
Adults (ages 18 and up)
Complete a library card application (available at the front desk)
Present a photo ID and proof of current Sumter County mailing address.
A photo ID, such as a driver’s license, non-driver’s ID, passport, student ID, military ID, or work badge, is preferred.
A patron without a photo ID must provide two (2) alternate forms of identification, such as a social security card, insurance card, credit card, etc.
Proof of address may be a recent (within 6 months) piece of delivered mail, a driver’s license, or a personalized check.
Patrons providing a PO Box as a mailing address must also provide proof of their physical street address.
Children & Teens (ages 6 to 17)
Complete a Library Card Application for Minors (available at the front desk or online here)
A parent or guardian must be present to present a photo ID and proof of current Sumter County mailing address.
A photo ID, such as a driver’s license, non-driver’s ID, passport, student ID, military ID, or work badge, is preferred.
A patron without a photo ID must provide two (2) alternate forms of identification, such as a social security card, insurance card, credit card, etc.
Proof of address may be a recent (within 6 months) piece of delivered mail, a driver’s license, or a personalized check.
Patrons providing a PO Box as a mailing address must also provide proof of their physical street address.
Students attending educational institutions, PreK-College, within Sumter County
Students who attend educational institutions, PreK-College, within Sumter County may obtain a card free of charge for one year if they present verification of enrollment and proof of current and permanent residence.

People who work (but do not reside) in Sumter County

Must pay an annual $10.00 registration fee
Adults in impermanent or transient housing situations

A patron without a photo ID must provide two (2) alternate forms of identification, such as a social security card, insurance card, credit card, etc.
Proof of address may be a recent proof of rent payment, a letter from the host, or a letter from an organization's administration.
This is a temporary card that expires after 6 months
Cards will not be issued to a person with the same address as a family member who currently has overdue books or owes an overdue fine.
*PLEASE NOTE: Due to library closing procedures, we typically do not begin the process of making a new library card 15 minutes before closing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do library cards expire?
A: Yes, they expire one year from the date they are issued*. To renew a library card, the patron must present a photo ID in person and confirm the accuracy of their physical address, phone number, and email address. The patron continues to use the card they were originally issued.
Q: How much does a new library card cost?
A: The Library charges $5.00 to replace a lost library card.
Q: Am I able to access my RPT Library account online?
A: Yes! To access your library account, you need to set up a PIN (personal identification number). This can be done when you sign up for a library card, any time you visit the library, or by phone. Please contact us.

How Long Can I Keep...
Books: 2 weeks, plus 3 renewals*
Audiobooks: 2 weeks, plus 3 renewals*
Magazines: 2 weeks, plus 3 renewals*
DVDs: 2 weeks, plus 3 renewals*
Wi-Fi Hotspots: 2 weeks, no renewals
*If an item has been placed on Hold by another patron, it cannot be renewed.
Fines/Overdue Charges
Materials become overdue at the closing of the Library the day the materials are due.
The Book Return is checked at the close of business each day, and materials that are placed in the Return after the Library closes on the day the materials are due will be considered overdue.
The overdue fine for all items, except Hotspots, is 10¢ per day, not to exceed the cost of the item.
The overdue fine for Hotspots is $1.00 per day.
