Updates to Library Policies
Ruby Pickens Tartt Public Library Announces Updates to Circulation and Children’s Policies
The Ruby Pickens Tartt Public Library remains committed to providing a safe, welcoming environment for patrons of all ages while ensuring compliance with the Alabama Public Library Service Administrative Code. The Library is announcing a significant policy change to ensure compliance with state regulations and maintain the highest standards of service for our patrons.
Effective October 1, 2024, the following changes will be in place:
1. Circulation Policies for Minors (6 to 17 Years Old):
Minors must have a parent or guardian-signed disclaimer on file to receive a library card.
For children under 13 years old, parents or guardians will have three library card options:
Child (Children's Access): This card allows access strictly to the Children’s section and blocks materials belonging to the Young Adult or Adult sections from being checked out.
Child (YA Access): This card allows access strictly to the Children’s and Young Adult sections and prevents materials belonging to the Adult section from being checked out.
Child (Full Access): This card allows full access to all library sections without checkout restrictions
For children 14-17 years old, parents or guardians will have two library card options:
Teen (YA Access): This card allows access strictly to the Young Adult section and the Children’s section and blocks materials belonging to the Adult section from being checked out.
Teen (Full Access): This card allows full access to all library sections without checkout restrictions.
Parents can revoke their child’s library card at any time.
2. Updated Children’s Policy:
Children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or childcare provider aged 16 or older.
Parents or guardians must remain in the Library during any children's program. Dropping off and picking up children after the program is not allowed.
Teens aged 14-18 may visit the Library unattended but must follow the Library’s Code of Conduct.
To facilitate these changes, the library will expire library cards for all minor patrons under the age of 18 on October 1st, 2024.

These updates are designed to maintain a safe, respectful library environment while complying with state regulations. The Ruby Pickens Tartt Public Library will continue to offer a broad range of resources and programs for all ages.
